Whatever be the outside temperature, we cannot keep on sitting in closed rooms during the whole daytime. However, during this period when repeatedly heat waves are passing through different parts of our country, we have to be especially careful to avoid any kind of mishaps.

In this regard, once again an important notification has been issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) through National Programme on Climate Change & Human Health (NPCCHH).

Today, let me communicate a few major points from the recent notification, which I believe, will not only increase public awareness but also prevent many unwanted situations.

According to MoHFW’s ‘to do’ suggestions, staying hydrated is very important at this moment, especially for all people working outside covered areas. Apart from drinking sufficient water, using Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and consuming homemade drinks like lemon water, butter milk or lassi, fruit juices with some added salt will help people stay healthy.

While going out in the sunlit areas, people should try to cover their bodies to the extent possible. Wearing light coloured, thin and loose cotton garments is preferable. Covering head during exposure to direct sunlight is very essential. Also, wearing shoes or chappals while going out in sun is safe.

As far as possible, people should try to be in well-ventilated and cool places. With a view to blocking direct sunlight & heat waves, it has been suggested to keep windows and curtains closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of the house or building. Those may be reopened at night to let cooler air in.

It has been advised to reschedule the outdoor activities to cooler times of the day as far as possible i.e., morning and evening.

Although anyone at any time can suffer from the heat stress & heat-related illness, some people, like infants & young children, pregnant women, physically ill (especially with heart diseases), people with mental illness, people working outdoor and travellers are at greater risk than others – and should be given additional attention. Let us follow the good practices and stay fit in the summer.
